About cats
-
A female cat gives birth to 10-15 kittens a year. Spaying eliminates the phenomenon of killed newborn kittens in the streets. It also protects the cat from ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the risk of cervix cancer which for a stray cat without veterinary help is a painful and horrible death.

-
In male cats castration eliminates the risk of testicular cancer. They become less aggressive, less territorial, rarely use urine to mark their territory and their urine does not smell as strong.

-
Cyprus Church acknowledged that the situation got out of control, as said by Metropolitan Isaiah of Tamasos and Orinis, who invites people to neuter their domestic pets as well as strays. The presence of this huge number of cats does not serve any purpose other than putting them at risk of being targeted and abused. In countries like U.K, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Norway, stray cats rarely exist as they are officially categorized as pets since many years now.

Nicosia is overflowing with stray cats (it is estimated that their population exceeds half a million). The luckiest ones spend their lives in the houses of animal lovers or at shelters. But unfortunately the vast majority of stray cats have a very difficult and often a very short life. Starvation, illnesses, exposure to weather phenomena, abuse from people, being poisoned or run over by cars are the daily risks they have to face.
